Issues Facing House District 42

Montana is an energy-producing state, and House District 42 sits in a region with significant coal, oil, and natural gas resources. A strong energy future means reliable power, good-paying jobs, and a stable local economy.

Public safety in rural Montana, Indian Country, and urban communities presents unique challenges. Adequate law enforcement resources, emergency response capacity, and community-based approaches to safety are essential for HD 42 residents.

Agriculture — cattle ranching, hay production, and dryland farming — is the backbone of Big Horn County's economy. Supporting Montana's agricultural producers means protecting their ability to operate, compete, and pass their operations to the next generation.

Rural roads, bridges, and infrastructure are critical lifelines for HD 42 communities. Reliable transportation infrastructure affects everything from emergency response times to the cost of doing business in southeastern Montana.

The cost of living across HD 42 — from rural communities and the reservation to portions of Billings — has risen significantly. From healthcare access to housing costs to the price of everyday goods, HD 42 residents face real economic pressures that deserve attention in the legislature.
